Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about spay and neuter procedures.

Is the surgery safe?
Yes, spay and neuter surgeries are among the most common veterinary procedures performed. With Dr. Dan's 35+ years of surgical experience and modern anesthesia protocols, your pet is in excellent hands. We monitor vital signs throughout the procedure and during recovery.
How long is the recovery period?
Most pets recover quickly. Dogs and cats typically need 10-14 days of restricted activity to allow the incision to heal. We'll provide pain medication and detailed aftercare instructions. Most pets are back to their normal selves within a few days.
Will my pet gain weight after surgery?
Spaying/neutering can slightly reduce metabolism, but weight gain is easily prevented with proper diet and exercise. We'll discuss nutrition recommendations to help keep your pet at a healthy weight.
What should I do to prepare my pet?
We'll provide specific instructions, but generally your pet should fast (no food) after midnight the night before surgery. Water is usually okay until the morning. Make sure your pet is current on vaccinations and bring any medications they're taking.
Do you spay/neuter exotic pets?
Yes! Dr. Dan has extensive experience with exotic pets including rabbits, ferrets, and other small mammals. Spaying female rabbits, for example, is highly recommended to prevent uterine cancer. Contact us to discuss your exotic pet's needs.
