Wildlife Contamination: An infected raccoon or deer urinated in a patch of grass or a small depression in the dirt.
The Puddle Problem: Rain falls, creating a puddle or keeping that soil damp. The bacteria can live in that wet soil or stagnant water for weeks, even months.
The Exposure: Your dog goes outside to play. They might take a quick lap of water from that puddle, sniff the damp grass, or even just walk through it and later lick their paws.
The Entry: The bacteria enter your dog’s body through their mucous membranes (mouth, nose, eyes) or through any tiny cut or scratch on their skin.
